NEW assignment: Portraits

 Portraits 

Working with 1  model of your choice, you should plan to photograph portraits of this individual. You will need 10 different shots of your model  . Plan to shoot a variety of different shots including but not limited to: a couple of head shots, several full body shots, creative shots. Study other portrait photographer's work and learn how to effectively pose your model. This should be part of getting ready for your assignment.

This assignment is worth 30 marks. 20 marks for your portraits posted to Mdrive and 10 marks for your portraits put into a slideshow, set to music for viewing. If you do not meet the deadline for the slideshow, you will receive a zero for the presentation portion of the assignment.

Tips:

• plan your shots/shoot
• be aware of where the light is ( best times to shoot dawn and dusk)
• choose a good background
• use a prop ( umbrella, hat, scarf, pumpkin etc)
• shoot people in their element ( skateboarder with a skateboard at the skatepark)
• create a rapport with your model and direct the shoot, which means tell the model what you want them to do.
• get out and shoot when the weather is good.
• make sure you are not too far away from your subject
• these shots should not all be shot on the same day and MUST be edited.

Week of March 10-14

TERM 4

• Step up/down 5 shots
• Overlay in Photoshop ( 3 images, one must be your own, please use opacity and/or lighting effects on the right side of Photoshop near opacity in this overlay. Again we are trying to create an artistic photo.
• NEW:  Signs of Spring: 5 shots plus 5 cherry blossom shots. Get out into the world and shoot the concept of spring. Ask yourself...what are the signs of Spring, try to think outside the box!

Step by Step Instructions for Doing the Shot ( 4 shots in one)

You should be going out with a partner, a digital slr camera and a tripod. Find a location that has a clean and interesting background. Start by taking some practice shots to make sure you are not too far away from your subject. Have your subject think about doing 4 different poses. Each pose will be a different shot. ALL OF THESE PHOTOS SHOULD BE SHOT ON THE SAME DAY. Come back to the class, and using the card reader upload the photos and save them in your folder and label  Multiplicity.

1. If you need to crop or edit for lighting, do this first to all photos.
2. Photos should be labelled: Background, Photo1,2,3,4.
3. Open Original photo in Photoshop. This is the photo you will be adding the other photos to.
4. Next open Photo 1 in a new tab, use the selection tool ( the fourth tool down on the left) to select around the photo, it does not have to be perfect since you can erase if you have to.
5. Next go to edit/cut and cut out the image you have just selected.
6. Open your original photo and edit/paste it in the the original photo( photo 1). It will not be exactly where you want it...so go to edit/transform/scale, hit apply or the return button. Then using the move tool ( top on left) move the photo where you want it. If scaling it up or down, make sure to hold the shift key when scaling so you resize proportionately. ( I will be marking to make sure your photos are not warped)
7. Continue the same for photo 2 and 3
8. When finished, save a Photoshop version and a jpeg version.

Thurs Feb 20

  HEAD SWAP: 10 marks A number of you did this assignment in grade 9, If you did then you can choose to shoot a levitation shot and put into a new background. See me for details.

1. Find a photo of a person on the internet. When using google to find the image, get the largest size photo possible. ( ie superman, famous model or celebrity) no animals or cartoons. Right click COPY, open Photoshop, File NEW, edit PASTE

2. Bring in the Headshot of Yourself or a friend. Go to file OPEN and open from your file on the MDRIVE. It should automatically open in Photoshop.

3. Bring in both photos to Photoshop. Go to IMAGE, IMAGE SIZE and change the photos to both be close to the same size. Height 11 INCHES. If one is way bigger than the other it will be difficult to do the assignment.

4. While under ADJUSTMENTS, you can also change both photos to BLACK and WHITE.

5. The photos should be open in different tabs.

6. Next go to the SELECTION TOOL,(4th tool down on the left, right click) and using the tool, move the tool around the head of one of your photos, then click on EDIT CUT and go to your next photo.

7. When on the next photo, click on EDIT, PASTE. This will put the head on the page. Then to resize the head, click EDIT, TRANSFORM, SCALE. This will put a box around the photo and allow you to change the size of the head, you can also slightly rotate the head if you go to ROTATE under TRANSFORM tool.

8.. Then you want to tweak the image by moving into place with the pick/move tool, or use the eraser tool to clean up the edges.

Note: SAVING the file: If you need to continue working on the head swap, save as a COPY Photoshop file so you can come back and work on the image. It is always a good idea, to save your edited photos as Photoshop files as a backup in case you need to go back and make changes. However, if you think you are done you can save as a JPEG ( which is save as copy).

Take 5 Step Down Photos: you are to take 5 different photos using this technique. Put in folder called STEP DOWN. Each person should take their own shots.

The best part about this picture-taking tip is you can execute it by yourself. For the best outfit pics, use the .5 wide angle option on the iPhone’s back camera. Place your phone down low (can touch the ground), making sure you’re in-frame with some test shots. You will need to put the timer on, try 3-5 sec. Once you've found the best perspective, pose by kicking a leg out towards the camera, reach your hand toward it, or lean down to look at the camera lens. Capturing with the wide angle setting adds a level of distortion to your pics for added personality.

Routine for taking the camera out and practice using. 

• put strap around neck, have a wide base when standing, bring arms in close to chest
• hold down shutter to allow lens to focus, then press down shutter button
• the squiggly arrow on the dial turns the flash off

 Using the Digital SLR cameras:

• Get camera from bin, turn on check battery
• check lens to make sure it is on auto, make sure camera settings are on auto, and stabilization is on
• Next get a card from the front of the room, put in camera
• Sign out the camera and card in the book
• check/clean lens, reformat the card, take a test photo
• head out to take your photos

Returning the camera

• Bring camera back, make sure it is turned off, return card after you have uploaded photos
• Get a card reader to upload your photos onto the computer
• Cross off your name in the book
• If the battery is less than half, switch it out for a fresh battery, and place the other battery in the charger.

 Photo composition is how a photographer arranges visual elements within their frame. It's a pleasing organization of objects within your rectangle.

Understanding Rule of thirds

The rule of thirds is a composition guideline that divides an image into nine equal parts to help create a well-balanced and visually interesting image. 

• Divide the image into nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines 
• Place the subject in the left or right third of the image 
• Place important elements along the lines or at their intersections 

Why it works 

• Helps balance the subject with negative space
• Draws the viewer's eye to the main focal point
• Creates more tension, energy, and interest

How to use it

• Most cameras and phones have a rule of thirds setting 
• In landscape photography, the horizon line is often placed on a thirds line

Continue working on these assignments on your phone, they do not need to be uploaded today. Each person needs to take their own original photos. If you do not have a phone work with someone who has one. 

Assignment #1: Find your top 5 photos on your phone and upload to the Mdrive under Chase Photo10 in your folder, label them TOP 5. (5 marks)

Assignment #2: HEADSHOTS; take 5 head and shoulder shots, crop and edit and upload onto the M drive label folder HEADSHOTS (10 marks)

Headshot Criteria

• background clean
• good eye contact with camera
• edited head and shoulders
• pleasing to the eye
• in focus
• speaks to subject's personality
• all headshots should be consistent

Assignment #3 : Find one object or person to shoot outside, shoot them 5 different ways, then choose your best photo and title it  BEST 1 Put all photos taken into the folder label it BEST on M drive.(10 marks)
